Tony Moores, a long-standing advocate for nurses and current secretary-treasurer of the Registered Nurses’ Union of Newfoundland and Labrador (RNUNL), was one of two recipients of the 2024 Ovation Award during the union’s biennial convention last November. The prestigious award, which recognizes exceptional union activism, left Moores both honoured and surprised.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis award means so much to me,\u201d said Moores. \u201cTo be included with such a great group of previous recipients who are such strong union activists is a true blessing. People who I hold a tremendous amount of respect for, and some who have shaped the union activist that I have become.\u201d<\/p>\n
For decades, Moores has been a dedicated supporter of Registered Nurses and Nurse Practitioners across Newfoundland and Labrador. His advocacy, leadership, and willingness to assist others have earned him admiration among his peers. Moores credits his passion for union work as a key motivator that keeps him committed to representing RNUNL members. \u201cRepresenting RNs and NPs of NL is something that I take great pride in and will continue to do until I retire. Receiving the Ovation Award will certainly be a highlight of my nursing career and my union activism,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n
Raelynn Strangemore, a member of the Board of Directors for RNUNL\u2019s Region 2, nominated Moores for the award. Strangemore\u2019s heartfelt nomination described Moores as a constant presence in union activities and a tireless advocate for his colleagues.<\/p>\n
\u201cAs far back as I can remember, Tony has always been available to members, both past and present,\u201d Strangemore noted. \u201cHe is there to support you, cheer you on, praise you, go to bat for you, and do it all without expecting anything in return. He is the true meaning of the Ovation Award.\u201d<\/p>\n
Strangemore highlighted Moores\u2019 leadership and impact on his workplace, where he works on a demanding unit at the Health Sciences Centre (HSC). Despite the challenges of understaffing and overwork, Moores remains a beacon of stability and support for his colleagues, ensuring they can deliver safe and effective care to patients. His humour and positive energy also play a crucial role.<\/p>\n
\u201cTony\u2019s smile\u2014while devious sometimes, lol\u2014is contagious. His laughter and jokes keep you entertained and remind us all how laughter can alter any situation,\u201d said Strangemore.<\/p>\n
Beyond his professional and union roles, Moores is known for his deep love of family and his passion for breeding and showing dogs. At each RNUNL convention, Moores and one of his award-winning show dogs march proudly in the opening ceremonies\u2014a tradition eagerly anticipated by many attendees.<\/p>\n
Moores has worn many hats within RNUNL, including shop steward, branch executive, and now secretary-treasurer. He continues to represent RNUNL members at events across the province and country. His visibility and commitment have made him a well-recognized figure among union leaders nationwide.<\/p>\n
\u201cHe is almost like the face of RNU,\u201d Strangemore observed. \u201cI\u2019m sure if you asked any union person across NL or Canada if they remember Tony, they\u2019d say, \u2018The funny guy from NL?\u2019 He\u2019s quite easy to recall.\u201d<\/p>\n
In receiving the Ovation Award, Tony Moores has solidified his place as one of RNUNL\u2019s most respected and beloved activists. As Strangemore summarized, \u201cWhen I think of the Ovation Award and the vision of who should receive this honour, it definitely makes me think of Tony.
