RN, Carbonear General Hospital<\/strong><\/p>\n

During a recent visit to the emergency room, a parent found more than just medical attention for their child\u2014they found calm, compassion, and expert care in Registered Nurse Gina Dove.<\/p>\n

\u201cHer assessment skills in that moment were exceptional,\u201d they wrote in their nomination. \u201cI know she stayed late after her shift had ended to ensure our child received the prompt care he required. I am forever grateful for her kindness and competence\u2014thank you, Gina.\u201d<\/p>\n

Expert Care Rooted in Experience<\/strong><\/p>\n

Gina brings years of experience in emergency medicine across both urban and rural settings. She is confident under pressure, quick to act, and unwavering in her commitment to patient safety.<\/p>\n

\u201cI love my profession. I take pride in being a nurse and helping others both on shift and off. I think it comes down to having compassion for others, empathy, and being able to critically think in difficult situations\u201d.<\/p>\n

She describes expert care as more than a checklist of tasks. It\u2019s about recognizing patterns, trusting your instincts, and adapting on the fly\u2014all while remaining grounded in evidence-based practice.<\/p>\n

\u201cEvery shift is an opportunity to learn something new,\u201d she said. \u201cAdaptability is essential.\u201d<\/p>\n

\"Gina<\/p>\n

Calm in Crisis, Strength Under Pressure<\/strong><\/p>\n

Working in the ER means facing difficult situations every day. Gina meets these moments with professionalism, grit, and clarity.<\/p>\n

\u201cPatients and families often feel helpless and out of control,\u201d she said. \u201cOffering timelines, updates, and clear explanations helps them feel supported and seen.\u201d<\/p>\n

Since the pandemic, she has witnessed a rise in aggression toward healthcare workers\u2014adding another layer of complexity to already high-pressure environments.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s a noticeable lack of respect and more hostility,\u201d she explained. \u201cWe have to manage that assertively to keep staff and patients safe.\u201d<\/p>\n

\"Gina<\/p>\n

Grit, Resilience, and the Power to Adapt<\/strong><\/p>\n

Working within a strained healthcare system takes more than clinical skill\u2014it demands strength, flexibility, and a deep sense of purpose.<\/p>\n

\u201cWorking within a broken healthcare system can be tough,\u201d Gina said. \u201cThere are provider shortages across the province and the country. But I\u2019m proud of our ability as Registered Nurses to adapt, to meet challenges head-on, and to continue providing compassionate care and positive outcomes.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a Privilege to Make a Difference\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

For Gina, the real reward lies in the impact she has on the lives of patients and families. As she reflected with her coworkers, emergency nursing has taught her some of life\u2019s most valuable lessons.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis profession has taught me resilience, adaptability, and compassion,\u201d she said. \u201cEmergency nursing builds thick skin. Every day we face difficult concerns, and the ability to pick someone up at the worst point in their life and help them put the pieces back together\u2014that\u2019s the most rewarding part of my job.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s a privilege to make a difference in people\u2019s lives, and I feel grateful for the opportunity to do so.\u201d<\/p>\n

Gina\u2019s story is a powerful reminder that nurses don\u2019t just provide care\u2014they help transform lives.<\/p>\n
