A Lifelong Commitment to Caring<\/strong><\/p>\n

Denise Reid graduated from the General Hospital School of Nursing in 1990 and began her career at the Janeway in neonatal intensive care. Since then, her journey has included work at the Waterford\u2019s ECT Clinic and, for over a decade now, at the Mount Pearl Square Hemodialysis Unit.<\/p>\n

Reflecting on what it means to be a nurse, she says:<\/p>\n

\u201cI guess it would mean that giving myself \u2014 giving my all to somebody \u2014 all of my expertise, all my knowledge, all of my compassion to make their treatments, their day better…\u201d<\/p>\n

At Mount Pearl Square, Denise is part of a team caring for over 200 patients. Many of them require dialysis three or four times a week, for hours at a time. The result is long-term relationships that grow deep:<\/p>\n

\u201cYou go through all the ups and downs with them and that\u2019s an incredible thing too when you become family with them, and they know about your children and your pets and you know about theirs\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n

Nothing Happens Without the Team<\/strong><\/p>\n

Denise is emphatic that the strength of her workplace lies in the team.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is not a place where you can just take your own patients and just put a bubble around yourself\u2026 you have to work together, or things will never ever happen.\u201d<\/p>\n

She sees supporting new nurses as essential to that team environment, especially now that most staff are newer to the profession.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf they are feeling more comfortable and confident, then they know that they can have a conversation like, you know, what am I doing with this patient? Can you help me out\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n

And while formal debriefing sessions are sometimes offered, Denise finds informal peer support the most meaningful:<\/p>\n

\u201cThe best debriefing session is with somebody who knows exactly what you just went through\u2026 it\u2019s nurses supporting nurses and it has to be that way, or you\u2019d never survive. You\u2019d never go back again.\u201d<\/p>\n

\"Denise<\/p>\n

Making Nurses Feel Celebrated<\/strong><\/p>\n

Denise\u2019s colleague Sandi Pinksen nominated her to be recognized during National Nursing Week, not only for her excellent care and mentorship, but for the time and joy she brings to celebrations.<\/p>\n

Denise organizes a full slate of activities every year:<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve been doing this for a couple of years now and it\u2019s a lot of nurses \u2014 it\u2019s over 70 nurses.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI put up the graduation pictures during nurses\u2019 week\u2026 I have them all up on the wall with their names and the patients love to look at that too, and see us when we were younger, of course.\u201d<\/p>\n

Sandi wrote that Denise \u201cplays her \u2018Price is Right\u2019 music as she makes her rounds each day to deliver their little prize,\u201d and that her efforts help people \u201cfeel celebrated and appreciated\u201d even in such a high-pressure field.<\/p>\n

Delivering Expert Care in a Complex Environment<\/strong><\/p>\n

Asked about the term \u201cexpert care,\u201d Denise replied:<\/p>\n

\u201cAll care should be expert care. Once you\u2019re in your designated area and you\u2019ve done your mentorship and you still have support around you\u2026 the whole patient should be seen not just through the symptoms, but every area of their lives should be positively impacted by expert care.\u201d<\/p>\n

The dialysis unit has changed significantly since she began.<\/p>\n

\u201cMuch higher acuity, much sicker. It\u2019s incredible.\u201d<\/p>\n

We see patients now with cancer, so they\u2019re having cancer treatments and having dialysis treatments\u2026 just so much more now than dialysis.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re doing IV antibiotics; we\u2019re doing blood transfusions\u2026 And of course mental health issues \u2014 that goes everywhere.\u201d<\/p>\n

Despite this, Denise says the team never loses sight of the whole person:<\/p>\n

\u201cYou still try to keep them positive and engaged in their care\u2026we\u2019re trying to give them quality of life.\u201d<\/p>\n

A Profession That Changes Lives<\/strong><\/p>\n

Whether it’s in moments of joy or crisis, Denise finds fulfilment in knowing her work matters:<\/p>\n

\u201cYou have the ability to change for the better somebody\u2019s life\u2026 and I think that\u2019s all that any of us want to do.\u201d<\/p>\n

And she is quick to credit her coworkers:<\/p>\n

“I guess I just want people to know how proud I am of the amazing team I work with. I\u2019m just one small part of a truly incredible group of nurses.”<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
