A Welcoming Presence in Emergency Care<\/strong><\/p>\n

When patients arrive at the emergency department in Old Perlican, many are in distress, pain, or crisis. But for those greeted by Registered Nurse Laura Turpin, that tension often lifts immediately.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou automatically feel a bit better,\u201d wrote one patient in their nomination of Turpin. \u201cShe\u2019s the most kindest nurse there… her professionalism is top tier… The way she deals with mental health is like no other. She\u2019s the best, and I wish there were more like her.\u201d<\/p>\n

Turpin has been drawn to nursing since childhood. \u201cI wanted to be a nurse ever since I was little\u2014like, kindergarten little,\u201d she said. That calling has only deepened with time.<\/p>\n

Nursing in a High-Stakes Rural Setting<\/strong><\/p>\n

Working in a rural emergency department comes with significant challenges. Nurses in rural emergency rooms are seeing more patients with serious conditions\u2014like chest pain and shortness of breath\u2014who are bypassing larger centers in hopes of shorter wait times. It\u2019s a worrying trend that puts lives at risk and places even greater demands on under-resourced teams.<\/p>\n

In these high-pressure moments, Turpin draws on both her experience and the strength of her team.<\/p>\n

\u201cInside, I might panic a little at first,\u201d she said. \u201cBut I take a deep breath and remind myself\u2014I\u2019m here, I know what I\u2019m doing, and I\u2019ve got a team around me.\u201d<\/p>\n

That includes a network of experienced nurses who are just a phone call away. \u201cIf I call and say I need help, they\u2019ll come\u2014no questions asked. They\u2019ll drop everything and be there, even on their day off. That\u2019s the kind of team we have.\u201d<\/p>\n

\"Laura<\/p>\n

Positivity as a Professional Standard<\/strong><\/p>\n

Turpin\u2019s optimism is part of what makes her stand out. Amidst short staffing, burnout, and an influx of critically ill patients, she maintains a steadfastly positive outlook.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t watch the news. I live in the here and now,\u201d she said. \u201cIf I stay negative, that\u2019s what I reflect back to my patients. And I don\u2019t want to be that kind of nurse.\u201d<\/p>\n

That attitude has earned her a reputation not just for kindness, but for professionalism. As one patient put it: \u201cSoon as you enter emerg and see her, you automatically feel a bit better.\u201d<\/p>\n

Expert Care in Every Situation<\/strong><\/p>\n

For Turpin, expert care isn\u2019t just about having the right answers\u2014it\u2019s about knowing when to seek them out.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn nursing school, one of my instructors told me, \u2018You\u2019ve just started a career where you\u2019ll be learning for the rest of your life.\u2019 And it\u2019s true. I still learn something new every day.\u201d<\/p>\n

Working without many of the supports found in larger hospitals, Turpin says expert care means staying current on best practices, knowing how to advocate for patients, and recognizing when to call for help.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou have to stay on top of your education,\u201d she said. \u201cYou need to know what you\u2019re doing\u2014because in a rural setting, sometimes you\u2019re the only one there. But you\u2019re never truly alone. You\u2019ve got your team, your doctors, your LPNs, and the senior nurses who will show up if you need them.\u201d<\/p>\n

It\u2019s a model of care built on competence, collaboration, and commitment\u2014and Turpin is proud to be part of it.<\/p>\n

\"Laura<\/p>\n

Proud to Be Part of a Resilient Nursing Community<\/strong><\/p>\n

Despite the challenges, Turpin remains deeply proud of her profession\u2014and especially of her peers.<\/p>\n

\u201cNurses in Newfoundland are a little bit different,\u201d she said. \u201cNo matter what we\u2019re going through, we slog through it and get it done. We help people every day, even when the resources aren\u2019t there, even when it\u2019s not technically part of our role.\u201d<\/p>\n

That resilience, she says, sets nurses in this province apart. \u201cWe don\u2019t just give vitals and pills and end our day. We do everything. We fill in the gaps because we care.\u201d<\/p>\n

Still, it\u2019s the emotional connection with patients that fuels her passion.<\/p>\n

\u201cI love my job. I love helping people. And when I see a patient walking down the road weeks later\u2014someone I helped save\u2014that\u2019s everything.\u201d<\/p>\n
