RNU in Action

RNU in the Community

December 20, 2023

Over the last few months, RNU members, staff, and board members participated in public events and made significant contributions to our community. Here are a few activities that we’ve been up to since the spring.

Pinnacle Awards

On June 14, RNU was presented with a 2023 Pinnacle Award of Excellence – Special Events External from the International Association of Business Communicators – NL Chapter. This award was for the work we did on the Raise Your Voice! Rally for Nursing & Safe Patient Care event held during RNU’s 28th Biennial Convention where RNU publicly launched the Beyond Broken campaign.

(L-R): David Hammond, Director of Corporate Services/Interim Executive Director; Jennifer Brown, Digital Communications Coordinator; and Jonathan Hamel, Communications Specialist accepted the 2023 Pinnacle Award at an IABCNL event held at the Johnson Geo Centre on June 14, 2023.

Pride Across the Province

This year, Newfoundland and Labrador celebrated Pride in a big way. There were many events and parades planned across the province, and RNU members came together to show their support for the diversity of our membership and the LGBTQ2IA+ community.

Members attended Pride events in Corner Brook, Gander, Fogo Island, and St. John’s.

RNU President Yvette Coffey signing the St. John’s Pride 2023 Partner Declaration Form. RNU was proud to be a Rainbow Sponsor, valued at $1,000, for St. John’s Pride this year.

Branch 8 members attended the Gander Pride Flag Raising on June 2.

Branch 11 members marched in the Corne Brook – Bay of Islands Pride Parade on June 17.

The Community Supports/Personal Care Home Program in the Holyrood Office celebrated Pride Month in June with a Pride Potluck. A colour was drawn from a bag and they brought in food to match. The team consists of registered nurses, social workers, clerical staff, and a behavioral management specialist.

RNU staff, Region 09 members, family and friends participated in the St. John’s Pride Parade on July 23.

Branch 42 members had a lovely time at the Community Pride Walk on July 29.

Royal St. John’s Regatta

The Royal St. John’s Regatta took place on Wednesday, August 2, and is one of RNU’s favourite traditions. We’d like to sincerely thank all those who volunteered with us at the Royal St. John’s Regatta who made our Seniors’ Rest Stop another great success!

We’d also like to acknowledge RNU’s very own Gabe Houlihan, who goes above and beyond every year to make our Seniors’ Rest Stop possible.

2024 will be our 40th year lakeside!

Kids Eat Smart

The Kids Eat Smart Foundation held their annual Radiothon on November 8, which raised nearly $400,000! On behalf of RNU, Vice President-Elect Kim Parsons proudly presented a $5,000 donation.

The RNU team – Kim, RN (VP Elect), Linda, RN (Labour Relations Officer), and Tobie (Accountant), were on site to answer phones and accept donations.

RNU is proud to support the Kids Eat Smart Foundation Newfoundland and Labrador. Every child deserves the nutrition they need to learn, grow, and develop.
