RNU in Action

RNU in the Community

March 14, 2023

This past year, RNU members and staff gave back to the community in big ways through our annual giving and our partnership with Johnson Insurance. Through this partnership, Johnson provides an Administrative Support Agreement payment to RNU each year which we donate back to causes in our community. Here are a few donations in 2022.

Community Food Sharing Association

In December, RNU was pleased to donate $6,000 to the Community Food Sharing Association, made on behalf of the RNU Board of Directors and staff. The Community Food Sharing Association manages the collection and distribution of food through 54 food banks to more than 10,7000 children, women, and men throughout Newfoundland and Labrador.

RNU’s Digital Communications Coordinator Jennifer Brown and RNU’s President Yvette Coffey presented a $6,000 donation to Tina Bishop, Manager of the Community Food Sharing Association on December 21, 2022.

 MUN Food Bank

RNU Staff (NAPE Local 7018), presented a cheque to the MUN Food Bank just before the holiday season. The $250 cheque was presented by our Shop Steward Lori Upshall (Labour Relations Officer) and Secretary-Treasurer Victoria Atwood (Administrative Assistant).

Kids Eat Smart

RNU has been supporting the Kids Eat Smart Foundation of Newfoundland and Labrador since 2013.

In November, RNU participated in the Kids Eat Smart Radiothon, which raised over $340,000.

President Yvette Coffey proudly presented a $5,000 donation at the Kids Eat Smart Radiothon on behalf of RNU.

The RNU team – Kim Parsons, RN (Region 9 Rep), Donna Walsh (Executive Assistant), Melanie Brooks (Accounting) and Lori Upshall, RN (Labour Relations Officer) also volunteered on site to answer phones and accept donations.

Heart & Stroke

In June, RNU presented a $10,000 donation to the Heart & Stroke Foundation of Newfoundland and Labrador to support their Nursing Student Scholarships.

This donation is part of a three-year commitment, which will see a total of $30,000 donated to the Heart & Stroke Nursing Student Scholarships. The scholarships are available to students interested in cardiac or stroke nursing at the Faculty of Nursing, Memorial University, the Centre for Nursing Students, and the Western Regional School of Nursing.
