The Power of Your Voice: Shaping Our Next Collective Agreement
March 7, 2025
The strength of our union lies in its members. As we prepare for the next round of collective bargaining, your involvement is critical. This is your agreement with your employer—your working conditions, wages, benefits, and rights are all on the table. Active participation ensures that the priorities and concerns of Registered Nurses (RNs) and Nurse Practitioners (NPs) are at the forefront of negotiations.
What is Collective Bargaining?
Collective bargaining is the process through which employees, represented by their union, negotiate with their employer to establish the terms and conditions of employment. This includes salaries, benefits, job security, and workplace policies. Through collective bargaining, we advocate for fair and sustainable working conditions that reflect the value and expertise of RNs and NPs. This process is legally protected, ensuring that our voices are heard and that agreements reached are binding for both parties.
The Collective Bargaining Process: A High-Level Overview
Collective bargaining unfolds in several key stages:
- Planning & Proposal Gathering – Members submit ideas and priorities that shape our bargaining strategy. This is where your voice matters most.
- Building the Bargaining Committee – Once proposals are collected, a Provincial Bargaining Committee will be formed, ensuring diverse representation from different practice areas and regions.
- Negotiation – The Registered Nurses’ Union Newfoundland & Labrador (RNUNL) and the employer exchange proposals and engage in discussions to reach a fair agreement.
- Tentative Agreement – If a deal is reached, it is presented to the membership for a vote.
- Ratification – Members vote to accept or reject the agreement. A majority vote is required for approval.
Right now, we are in the planning phase, and this is where you come in. Your input is essential in determining what improvements and changes should be prioritized in our next agreement. Whether it’s better working conditions, enhanced benefits, or stronger protections, now is the time to make your voice heard.
